Long time iceracer and DAC member Klaus Bartels passed away Monday Jan. 8th around 9:30 from heart failure. He would have been 80 years of age in a month or so. Most people will remember Klaus drove the black VW Rabbit in FWD Rubber to Ice with his son Chris always riding as passenger for as long as I have been racing and I know long before that. I think it was last year he had to "tradeup" to a Golf. Klaus was the former president, long standing and active honorary president and very much the life force of the Deutscher Auto Club ( DAC ) right up until the last. He will be very much missed ...

Toronto Star Obituary:

BARTELS, Klaus – Honorary President of the Deutscher Automobil Club.

Suddenly at his home on January 8th, 2007, at the age of 79.  Klaus is survived by his loving wife Ruth and sons Bernd (Germany), Chris and Alex, father-in-law of Shoba and devoted grandfather to Christians and Alexa.  Survived by his brothers Joachim, Volker and his sister Sybille, all of Germany.  Having emigrated to Canada in 1956, Klaus always considered himself a proud Canadian who loved his adoptive country.  In keeping with Klaus’ spirit, the family asks that you do not mourn their loss, but share with them in the celebration that was Klaus’ life.  Klaus stood for integrity, comradeship, and the guarantee of never a dull moment.  Family and Friends will be received at the Giffen-Mack “Scarborough” Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 4115 Lawrence Ave East, West Hill (one block west of Kingston Road) 416-281-6800 on Friday, January 12th, 2007 from 11:00 AM until time of service in the chapel at 1:30 PM.  Interment private.  If so desired, donations in Klaus’ memory may be made to their Association for Community Living “Scarborough Division”.
