The last weekend
of ice racing has been officially changed to
"Boat Racing". Water, water, water everywhere!!! On
the track, in the car, all over people, flying up
in the air....
That's the wildest
and wettest weekend I have ever experienced to
date!
|
 |
There was so much
water on the track on Sunday that most of the
time spent on the track was dealing with a
hydroplanning car, or as in the case of Steff
Haas, trying to keep you feet dry. He and Ian Lok
had so much water in the car that the entire
passenger seat was soaked including Ian and when
they hit a snow bank the water in the foot wells
would create a huge wave inside the car that
would crash up against the door soaking everyone
inside. |
 |
There was
still a lot of snow on Saturday morning ... |
 |
...but by
Saturday noon the boat racing had begun |
 |
Temps
soared to 8C much more in the sun and life at the
Cliffe was better spent outdoors. |
 |
Saturday
nite was the Kinsmen annual Chili cookoff and
track skate and a huge bonfire was lit in the
middle of the pits. |
 |
1st place
for the chili went to Gord |
 |
here was
the 2nd place finisher. I thought all the chili
was excellent and I had 2 bowls. |

Lots
of surprise visitors showed up Sunday aternoon |
 |
Sunday,
more waterfun |
 |
Checkout
time Sunday and the pits look like a lake, there
was so much water coming off the track at the
track exit that there were 4 inch rapids. |

Saturday:
Nuts!
Sunday:
Even
more nuts! there was so much water that the clerk called
the day off mid afternoon, as you tried to make a run
down the straight you had only 1/2 a foot width right
next to the right side bank that was not under water and
as you passed the track exit the water had eroded the ice
so there was like a hollow. In the middle of the straight
water depth was about one foot and some people got their
left side front wheels "sucked" out into the
"lake" and stranded there. You will see for
yourself near the end of the video at left (1.5 minute
2MB Part 1 wmv file - use right click and "Save
Target As" technique please and then play from your
hard drive location, for Part 2 of the Video right click HERE and repeat "SAVE TARGET AS"
routine). You can tell the amount of hydroplanning going
on as evidenced by the amount of steering going on and
engine overreving as traction is lost. You can also hear
me laughing my head off at how insanely ludicrous this
event had become. What you needed was giant lugged snow
tires or rain tires to deal with all the water and slush.
