That's it until next year, the last weekend of ice racing is done and I am already suffering withdrawal. The season seemed to have rushed by with six weekends in a row - no postponed weekends. Looks like a repeat of last year's championship results with another Street Studs RWD win, Studs RWD win and Studs Overall win. Thanks to all who helped make this season a success: my sponsors Minden House B&B, The S/\Ctionizer, University Werks Landscape Construction, my friends and fellow racers, the organizing clubs, the Minden Kinsmen, the town of Minden for having us, and all the volunteers who donated tons of their time and energy and of course my wife who kicked me out of the house each weekend.

Brake line trick

Friday
I replaced the left front strut on the Ovlov as I had hopes that the weather report would hold true and Sunday would have above zero temps for grippy conditions - ideal for the Ovlov. The replacing of the strut went very well but the weatherman did not co-operate. I was told a little trick by a several people that if you make a small cut in the bracket that holds the rubber brake line in place you can bend the resulting tabs out of the way and have no need to undo any brake line fittings as the line will slide out of the bracket for strut removal and can be bent back to hold the line in place when done the strut swap. This of course was a simple yet enormously helpful tip. It took about an hour and a half to complete the strut swap. I still need to replace the wheel as the rim is  pretty mangled after the hit last weekend and the driver's side tie-rod end threads are now stripped so will eventually have to replace the tie-rod end.

BEMC drove around the pits on Friday afternoon and invited those who were already at the track to come to the trailer around 4PM and we could pre-register instead of lining up Saturday. That's a great idea that I hope the other clubs will consider.

Saturday
I arrived at the track early in the morning (7AM) after not being able to sleep much, to witness Rodney Schmelter "test crash" a model airplane into the very top of those 70 foot trees by the food booth. He got someone to climb up and get it down later in the day. The weather started damp and cold at -12C and warmed up a bit but remained damp and cold. I had set everything up for racing on Friday so there was not much to do except warm up the MR2 and climb in. I must say that the SS tires are pooched. The shoulders of the aluminum part of the studs was ground off and rounded because of running on dirt for the last 2 weekends last year. They should have been replaced at the start of this season - I noticed a continual slowing of the car over the last 3 weekends as a result of continued pin deterioration. None-the-less everything went well until my last 2 races in the afternoon the first of which was a studs race and the second a street studs race.

VIDEO clip

Off the start of the stud race I had to cross over the rut that had developed from the previous weekend and that unsettled the rear end enough that I lost some grip and had to lift a bit to relaunch my car. That allowed Andrew Majik on my left and Lee Waterworth, behind and to my right, to get a bit better start than me. I did manage to stay alongside Andrew but Lee had a run on me and decided to try a pass between me and the outside bank just before we turn into the 1st corner. The problem was that during this time I was continually being squeezed over to my right towards the outside banks by Andrew so when I saw Lee coming up the right side I thought "there's not enough room there" and a couple seconds later I found myself slamming into the banks and sitting facing the wrong way on track. The car had stalled and it took me a couple seconds to realize this. Once restarted I pulled a u-turn and tried the car out to see if it was good to go. I could hear the right front fender rubbing against the tire studs but the fenders are so flexible by now that I knew it was more making noise than damaging anything. I then proceeded to drive the best I had in a long while (watch this VIDEO of the stud race) in a mad bid to catch and eventually pass both Andriy Levin in the turbo Toyota Supra and then Richard Walker in the Chevette - the other 2 cars in my class -  for the win. Lee's car had hopped up over my right front wheel during the squeeze play and in so doing bent the wheel rim. They are hard-to-come-by vintage 1980 BMW aluminum alloy rims and so was very nervous about attempting to hammer them back ono shape without them breaking. However, using a piece of oak hardwood block against the shoulder of the rim and hitting that with a 10 pound hammer, the rim slowly came back to close to original shape. I really didn't know exactly what had happened to cause the crash until later that evening. Upon reviewing my in-car downloaded video of the incident on my laptop I concluded that Lee had made a bad call trying to make it by my right side between me and the snowbank - there just wasn't enough room to complete the pass and the gap was being narrowed as I was being pushed by Andrew towards the bank. Lee's left rear wheel got snagged on the front right corner of my car bouncing his left rear tire over my front right wheel which caused my spin to my right and into the bank.

Blue Corolla (car #230) hitting
my parked car (#24)

The second incident happened in the following street studs race - my last race of the day - on the 1st lap halfway through the 1st corner. I was just about finished making a pass on Tim Pennwell for 2nd place in a very tight gaggle of cars when I was spun from behind by the #230 blue Corolla which launched me up and over the frozen little "curb" bank that was formed to keep us out of the trough between it and the bigger inside snowbanks. I was definitely stuck and looking at another unwanted DNF. I sat there not moving for another 7 laps, just furious, while everyone made it past me wth no problem for SEVEN laps except the very same blue Corolla #230 who used me as the apex of that corner every lap and on the eighth time slammed into the driver's rear corner of my MR2.  (watch the VIDEO). I got stiff neck and trap muscles from the hit that stayed with me

through to Monday and another dent in my car. What kind of driver does it take to hit a parked car that's been in the same spot after SEVEN laps?
I find it so ironic that after all the talk about "avoidable contact" I should find myself smack in the middle of two perfectly "avoidable" examples. Nick Majors had finally made it to the track late Saturday and had entered that last street stud race for the first time with his "new" red MR2 - his first words to me when I caught up to him latter that night at the Rockcliffe were "I beat you in my first race !"

Sunday
I remember sitting on the grid for my first race Sunday and saying "Lord, after yesterday, please let me have a boring day". Indeed nothing happened in any of my races but after getting back into my car on the grid for my last race of the day I pushed the clutch in and felt it disengage like an inch from the floor. I pumped it a couple times and it seemed to work fine and I had no issues with it during the race. Andriy Levin had arranged with me, Tom Prentice and BEMC to take my MR2 out on track with street studs on for some practice laps at the end of racing on Sunday as he is interested in getting an MR2 for next year. He strapped in and got accustomed to the car then drove out of sight. About 10 minutes later he comes walking back towards my pit and says that the clutch is gone he got as far as the timing trailer and we need to go and tow it back - he never got on track. When I got there with my pickup truck I tried the clutch peddle but it was literally dangling from the linkage - no resistance - how's that for divine providence?!

I believe Randy Knapp did really well this weekend in the old car. Bit warmer Sunday and some melt and mud showed up in the paddocks.

Results:
Had a perfect score in all 4 races in Stud class this weekend. Not sure of Saturday's SS1 qualifier (placed 2nd or 3rd) or 1st race (2nd I think), DNF for second race and 1st in both races Sunday. For official results keep checking here ... http://www.casc.on.ca/iceRacing.php
