Lot's of accumulation

A fair amount of snow fell this past week and I was once again glad that I had brought along my snow blower. This was BARC's weekend to host and things went relatively smoothly with the exception they had to deal with a couple of roll overs one of which occurred during a front wheel drive rubber race creating a very lengthy delay for the stud cars waiting on mock grid. We also had our racing shortened by one race (out of 4 for the weekend)

due to nasty rain on Sunday. The track began to accumulate water and deepening slush and along with the two rollovers prompted the clerk to deem it "unsafe" and sent everyone packing. There were a couple non-race related injuries due to the extremely slippery conditions in and around the pits as well - it was difficult just trying to walk around.

Minden House B&B has graciously extended their sponsorship this year and I thank them for their continued support. If you are one of the few who have yet to experience the fabulous hospitality at the hands of the hosts, Gord and Leslie Elliott, you really need to call and book one of the beautifully decorated rooms at the main house. The hearty breakfasts are indeed inspired and required before a day on the snow banks trackside.

Racing:
The sun was out and temperatures in the morning Saturday started at around minus 20C and remained well below seasonal all day. Both cars fired up but the Ovlov took quite a bit of effort. A new entry by Graham  Lobban in my stud class S1 gave me some welcome competition for the MR2. They brought out the red 1985 MR2 with the 20 valve 1600cc twin cam producing 150HP. Mine produces around 115HP. Basically I got better starts but his could out pull me on the straight. I did ok until I went wide a few times at the end of the straight and finally he went by on the 3rd mistake so I finished in SACond place. I managed to keep him behind me for the last two laps in the second race Saturday to finish first. In the only race on Sunday I got a great launch on the start and never really was challenged and again finished first. The temperature on Sunday went up around plus 3C and poured rain most of the day.

Street stud  in the 240 Ovlov was pretty rough battling with Remi Klichta in the black Ovlov wagon with a fair bit of contact. But I struggled back to re-pass him  to finish third on Saturday. I found the street studs had very little grip probably due to the very cold temps and resulting very hard ice. I seem to get bettter grip as the ice gets softer. Leon Lok drove the 4 door 240 extremely well and I believe finished as high as a SACond in what looked like a well controlled car.

#4: Race 1 Sunday 02172008

The bright sunshine Saturday provided excellent lighting conditions for shooting video but the cold temps also caused a fair bit of snow dust trails so visibility was limited at times. The rain on Sunday made for a wet driver's seat as the homemade metal roof is minus a drip stop. The slush on the outside of the line was not something one wanted to venture into either.

Stud Car Video Highlights

Qualifier Saturday:
You can see the red MR2 grided in 4th towards the right of the opening shot. Watch for the near collision with the blue and black Bradburn Civic in the Saturday qualifier video (at left) as he collects the inside of the snowbank on the last corner and spins right in front of me. Finally get by the very wide Ian Lok Ovlov station wagon.

Race #1 Saturday:
Again got a great start from second on the grid and was running right up with the front wheel drive cars but visibility a bit of an issue making it difficult to spot turn in points/apexes. After like the third wide exit on turn one at the end of the straight I gave up the lead to the #171 red MR2 but not without a little side by side action through the kink

Race #2 Saturday:
Again an amazing start and right up to the front with the front wheel drive class. Lee Waterworth in the grey civic, Todd McCall in the black Civic and Steff Haas out front in the Rabbit. Watch for Tony McGrath in Nick Majors' Nissan 240sx facing the wrong way as I round the last corner halfway through the race - couldn't see him for the high snow banks. He gets going and then stuck in the "weeds" off the same corner as he tries to turn around - Menards not much good in the snow.

Race #1 Sunday:
Amazing start moving up with the front drive cars again, lots of standing water and slush.

The Ovlov began to have some issues with the top rad hose. It would  collapse when the motor cooled. The final consensus was that the thermostat was not functioning so it was removed and the car ran without. I am not sure this is the whole picture. I thought tit was water pump as the car developed a distinctive worn bearings sound only it was intermittent. The sound actually turned out to be caused by a vacuum leak because the EGR housing broke off and came away from the pipe that runs from the back of the exhaust manifold where it also had broken away causing increase in exhaust noise and poor performance overall. I plugged the pipe and the exhaust hole and zip tied the EGR back into place and all seems well except that the car will not come up to temperature now and as a result seems to be running a wee bit rich.
