So, as promised, here's
a couple photos of the finished project from the job
we were doing on 27 Jason Drive in Whitby and yes
there was some spring rain when I took the photos.
It took us 6 days with 4 men and equipment to
complete this project. The precast products that
were chosen are from Armtec/Brooklin. All product is
the Pewter Blend colour. The pavers are the tumbled
Inversa Series (dimple side up) and are laid in a
random cobble pattern of the 3 sizes available (8" x
8", 8" x 12", 4" x 8"). The two pillars have
lights inside and are constructed from tumbled Stone
Manor block with a cut natural
stone cap. The terraced planter walls and the steps
are constructed using tumbled Designwall Lite block
with matching coping.
We create beautiful
designs, then our very skilled and experienced crew
build them utilizing the best construction techniques to
guarantee you're satisfied!
What a
great start to the season weatherwise! We kicked off
constructing this year on the 1st Monday of April
and have completed several really nice projects and
a renovation.
The first couple photos at the left are the before
and after photos of a front
walkway and step made more inviting and practical by
curving and extending the walkway down along the drive so you
have someplace to stand when you exit your vehicle.
This project is in Oshawa and was completed in one day.
We are currently working on a front entrance patio,
steps, walkway to the town sidewalk along the side
of the driveway and terraced planter walls complete with two
lighted pillars. The next 3 photos at the left show
the before, the plans and what it looks like
currently under construction.
Crew at
work today
(May 16, 2012)
You can come visit us on this project located at 27
Jason Drive, Whitby (Map). It's a great opportunity for
you to see just how much hard work, expert detailed
craftmanship and careful construction technique goes
in to each University Werks professional build. The
most important part of any project is the foundation
preparation. Proper
excavation, base aggregate choice, depth and
compaction are critical to a lasting construct. This
project is a perfect example of the 3 main types of
hardscape constructs we encounter utilizing
precast materials - interlock pavers , steps and
retaining walls. All our pavers and the bottom
course of the planter walls and step block have a
minimum 8" compacted aggregate base beneath them.
Wall blocks and the inside and back side of the step
blocks have a minimum 8" width of drainage aggregate
which is protected from retained backfill and soil with
landscape fabric - this drainage aggregate is
critical and must be kept clean as it keeps these
areas completely free of any moisture that would
otherwise freeze and heave the construct.
I will include finished photos when we're done.

We
still have a couple months left to go in the season
and space left on our timetable for your project.
We've been quite busy
since the last time I wrote here. So let's see ...
we've installed a Design Wall Lite block retaining
wall and interlock walkway in Bowmanville, installed
an interlock patio in Pickering, renovated a set of
front steps and 500 square feet of interlock in
Whitby, completed a front and side walkways in
northeast Oshawa, replaced a 6x6 pressure treated
wall, a pressure treated fence and built new planter
wall in Whitby, installed a set of front steps and
interlock walkways in Orono, renovated another
retaining wall in Whitby, built a multilevel deck
using Timbertec's manmade decking in Bowmanville,
installed front steps, planting bed and interlock
walkway in Whitby, the same in Brooklin, renovated
several hundred square feet of interlock in Port
Perry, rebuilt an old collapsed retaining wall in
Ajax, constructed a georgeous designed front
entrance and interlock pathways in Columbus and most
recently built a substantial planter wall, patio and
set of stairs in Whitby and now
we
just started a complete new front landscape in
Courtice - whew - we do get around the Durham
region!

This
beautiful cedar deck project was just completed in
the little hamlet of Macedonia Village (that's in
the Town of Whitby). The subframe is pressure
treated wood while the decking and railing is cedar.
This excellent top quality deck was completed on
schedule and on budget. The result - another very
happy customer!
This project is #156 in
the deck photos gallery.

We
recently completed a really nice renovation to this
back yard interlock pool patio and surround. The
pavers are Unilock's Classico pavers which are
notorious for number of joints per square foot and
bigger joint widths allowing for more problems with
weed growth in the joints. Of course this patio had
been done some time ago (don't know by whom) by the
previous home owners and the weeds and moss had
pretty much established themselves in every joint
(see before photo at left).
We started by removing the pavers that had sunk and
needed to be raised and re-leveled cleaning out the
plant growth as we lifted them. Then the balance was
blasted with a 3600 psi power washer. This removed
the remaining plant growth in the balance of the
pavers and cleaned the surface of the pavers. After
a few days of sunny weather drying time we returned
and swept polymeric sand into the joints - this sets up in the joints like grout and
will help to prevent
seeds from finding someplace to germinate and sprout
in the joints. The finished reno looks brand new
(see after photo at left) and our client is
extremely pleased (read her email)

We've
been very busy dodging rain drops this spring, I'm
not sure I've ever seen so much rain in my 30 years
landscaping! I'm finally getting
a chance to update you with our work progress. We
have completed several jobs so far this year, mostly
in the Whitby area, and are currently finishing one
near Manning and Brock street. There is a before
photo to your left, a photo from today around noon
and a drawing of the plans for the finished project.
I will post a photo of the finished work here later.
Today is day 3 of a planned 3 day project and they
will just make it.
The landing you see at the front door is completely
filled with 3/4" clear limestone for drainage
purposes. It's very important that this is all that
is inside a retained space such as a landing. You
don't want any water trapped inside the space
contained by the block walls of the landing and
steps as when it freezes and then thaws it will push
apart the blocks and destroy the construct. All
planter walls are backfilled with the same for
drainage. I'm sure most of you have seen front steps
and landings that have been damaged by frost - the
reason being that typically either limestone
screenings, sand or some other aggregate that will
retain water has been used.

Having
witnessed the start of the landscape season 31
times, I do believe that the frequency of late
spring arrivals is increasing.
This spring has been cold, wet and at times some of
that white stuff showed up. But now the robins are
back, the ground is softening up and most
importantly my phone is ringing - all signs that
spring is finally here.
So far customer
enthusiasm has been good and April's work calendar
is filling up rapidly. Our construction schedule
commences this Monday, April 11th with the first
project for the season in northeast Oshawa - a
driveway excavation, front step and walkway
renovation.
If you want it done
early this season better call soon ...
I
wouldn't normally be sitting at my desk updating
this website but for the fact it's raining today and
it's been a while since I let you know what we've
accomplished since my last entry in July. Let's see,
there's been 2 decks, a pergola, 2 interlock
renovations, a retaining wall, 3 backyard patios, 3
front entrances and steps, a complete backyard
makeover with 48 pieces of 24"x24"x30" armour stone,
planting beds and pea gravel walkways. All are
excellent designs and all were constructed with
attention to quality as my clients can attest. I
show a few photos here but more photos for these
projects and others are available in their
respective photo galleries:
We
most recently completed a hot tub pad and screened
enclosure around the tub for a previous client in
his backyard in Oshawa. We started by rebuilding one
side of the existing landing that we had built
several years ago changing it from a curve to a
straight edge to accommodate the entry side of the
hot tub and at the same time provide a nice size,
18" high landing area adjacent to the side of the
tub for easy access into the tub. The top photo at
the left shows the way it was before, the second
photo shows the straightened side of the
landing and during install of the patio slab pad
which was laid on a minimum 8" compacted limestone
screenings base, and finally, after the tub was
moved into place, how the finished screened in
surround looks. The privacy screen was constructed
using three 6x6 support posts with double 2x8
scrolled end beams bolted to the support posts and
short decorative scrolled end 2x6 "joist" on top of
the beams. The four lattice "window" openings are
removable super privacy lattice sections that
provide you with the option to keep it closed in for
privacy when in place or they can be removed.
Previously we worked on a large fence project in
Pickering. The property required a pressure treated
wood fence built using 6x6 posts with 5/4" tongue
and groove boards on both sides in the back yard for
a total of 450' and the balance at the end of the
property enclosed with 162' of chain link fence.
Additional work included building a retaining wall
using precast Design Wall block with 3" thick coping
averaging 24" high by 50' long. This project was
constructed during the hottest heat wave of this
summer and during the month of June when record
rainfall was recorded.

May 18, 2010:
Front yard
complete in Ajax
We
have done a several restoration projects, a couple
of front walkways, a gorgeous front yard makeover
and yet another deck since I last blogged.
My client gave me a free hand in designing the front
yard pictured at left. I was able to turn a
relatively small, uninteresting footprint into a
beautiful and welcoming landscape.
I like the simplicity of this deck - the low
profile, the angled corners and decking laid on
a 45 degree angle provide just the right amount
of visual interest. With the deck level just 7"
to 8" above the surrounding lawn it's nice not
having a railing and it leaves a spaciousness to
the yard.
We are presently working on
a larger project involving the removal of 3900 square feet
of asphalt and replacing the same areas with 4200 square
feet of interlock.
Here's a short video from yesterday ...
We finished the
deck, fence and covering over the back porch
in Oshawa Monday afternoon (right on schedule) and
as you can see from the photos at left the results
were fantastic, the crew did a great job and we have
yet another happy customer! We're halfway through
the job in Brooklin that we started Tuesday and from
there we are moving to the south end of Ajax to
complete a front yard makeover.

Spring arrived early this year
and another season of landscape construction is upon us! Our
4 man team is back in action and after several years working
together they have become a very efficient and skilled crew.
We started construction on Tuesday this week on a new wood
deck and a fence in Oshawa. We first had to tear down and
dispose of the old deck and fence. We worked a couple of
days and then hit some "April showers" today. This project
should be done by Monday and I will post finished photos for
you.
Current
progress
Our next project is in the
town of Brooklin where we will be completing a front walkway
and a back yard wood deck. We are currently booking for the
last part of April.
